3 3 Data description and representation, or metadata, provides information that makes it possible to find, understand, and use data in other contexts. In a broad sense even an email exchange between colleagues explaining how data can and cannot be used is a type of informal metadata ([[Edwards et al, 2011>>||anchor="Edwards"]]). The focus of this section of the CMM is on metadata that is structured according to a community standard, and aimed at a wider audience of potential users.
